Francesco Ganga Cucca - aka "Maestro Predischedda"

A sui generisschool teacher and a poet good at improvising using the dialect from Nuoro, Francesco Ganga Cucca is a unique and at the same time archetypical personality from the "Athens of Sardinia" between the 19th and the 20th century. Today, his memory still lives inside a dual soul: the professional one as a teacher; and the literary one, now in the guise of "Frate Sole" (inside Frate Sole e iSetteFratellibooklet written by his colleague Menotti Gallisay in 1927); now as "Maestro MancadettoPedduzza" according to the guise awarded to him by Salvatore Satta as a character of llgiorno del giudizio (1977); now as a real author of extemporary verses, remembered by Gonario Pinna inside his Antologiadeipoetidialettalinuoresi completed in 1969. In a few other cases, especially for the significant lack of written papers, dividing "historical" featuresfrom "legendary" ones is difficult. However, to confirm his life philosophy too, his poetical last will and testament is still effective, summed up in his verses «Sa bida la professo/ Chin d’unadimizzana/ De cudd’ ‘e ziaTatana/ Faragone», a well-known vernacular canto as well as an expression of the undeniable genius loci of the Barbagia county seat.
