The Aquarium of Cala Gonone, designed by the internationally renowned architects Peter Chermayeff and Sebastiano Gaias, was inaugurated on July, 10th, 2010. This modern architecture building was designed to be fully integrated in the natural scenery of the Gulf of Orosei. The wonderful park surrounding the Aquarium that features the typical Mediterranean vegetation, the low visual impact of the building from the sea and the presence of over three hundred species (most of them native to the area of the Gulf) confirm this philosophy and the Aquarium's focus on local peculiarities and environmental protection, also evidenced by the use of recycled materials, including granulated-glass filters, and cutting-edge reduced-power consumption systems.
The entrance hall is provided with a touch panel that will let visitors start the special sensory tour "The sea in Every sense", by which even blind visitors can easily discover the shapes, the scents and the sounds of the sea. The tour continues in an Amazonian setting, where visitors can admire the tank with the fearsome piranhas and the immensity of the open sea, recreated in the tank with the smooth-hounds, the Whiptail stingrays, the greater amberjacks, the dentexes, the colorful flying gurnards and the Caretta Caretta Turtle. This specimen, after being found beached and seriously injured near Ragusa, was entrusted to the care of the Aquarium staff that has been responsible for the recovery of the turtle since October 2014.
Visitors can not only admire the incredible camouflage abilities of the cuttlefish, the dark hiding places of moray eels and many other spectacular species native to the Gulf of Orosei, but also the amazing shapes and the bright colors of the beautiful specimen native to the reefs in the tropical tanks. They can finally even touch the rays, the sea stars, the urchins and the hermit crabs in the tactile tank.
After the first half of the tour, visitors can enjoy the new playground "Il Tartamondo", built in 2015 and entirely dedicated to sea turtles, where they can not only discover the habits of these beautiful animals, but also learn how to respect them.
Educational activities for school
Learning is the first step to protect. The activities of the Aquarium of Cala Gonone are based on this assumption and are mainly aimed at school students. As promotional and educational center, the Aquarium actually aims at teaching what and how important the Sea is, and how this precious environmental heritage can be respected and protected. Teachers can choose between 4 guided tours. The Aquarium staff will provide information and logistical support to help organize educational tours. Educational tours are available by advance reservation only.
