The MAN museum is a permanent public institution, devoted to the study, the conservation and the promotion of modern and contemporary art. The MAN fosters its cultural aims through several different activities inside and outside the museum, including the installation of exhibitions on contemporary visual art and on the history of art between the 19th and the 21st century, the promotion of cultural heritage (it houses a collection of Sardinian art) and the development of educational, mediation and learning programs designed to suit different audiences. The MAN Museum was first opened to the public in 1999 inside a building built in the 1920s, which had previously housed the Provincial Authority. Up until 2003 it served as an office of the Cultural Department of the Provincial Authority. The MAN’s collection originally included four public collections belonging to the Province of Nuoro, the Municipality of Nuoro, the Chamber of Commerce of Nuoro and the Provincial Touristic Authority. However, the need for intense exhibition and workshop activities in addition to the existing research and conservation tasks soon led to the development of a new project to turn the facility into a provincial art-gallery. In 2004 the museum was granted managerial autonomy and was established as an unincorporated body that became a member of Amaci, the national Association of contemporary art museums. In 2013 the MAN was regionally certified as a top-level museum.
The temporary exhibitions housed at the MAN Museum on a regular basis make it an ideal setting for research and communication on the best artistic innovations; exchanges with other museums and new artistic productions contribute to cultural dynamism and enhance local identity through the coexistence and the contact with global art. In line with its mission, the exhibitions housed at the MAN Museum focus on artists and movements of the history of art between the 19th and the 21st century and on experimental projects on contemporary art. The "extramural" activities outside the MAN are in line with the intramural tasks and are a way to extend the museum work to nearby towns and involve the local communities directly.
